The Only People You Can Trust are The Ones You Don't Know

There are some things you can only tell a stranger. Sometimes the only people you can trust are the ones you’ve never met. My best friends are the ones who live in another state, another country, another continent. I know that they will never betray me, and they will never have an ulterior motive for being friends (except maybe to learn English a bit better).
When my boyfriend broke up with me, I signed on and there was Tom. He was my German pen pal for months. We had shared everything and I knew I could trust him with my life. He comforted me when I cried, and stayed home from school just so he could be there during my sleepless night. He was the only one that could make me laugh the next day. Tom was my friend when I had no one else to go to.
Sure, some say that technology distances people from each other. They say a text message is a feeble imitation of a conversation, and a :) a meager replacement for a true smile. But by taking away the awkwardness of talking to a cute guy, or the stupidity you feel when you stumble over your words, you learn about the person behind the smile. Through technology, you can learn the soul of a person before being distracted by their appearance. The friends who know me best will always be the ones who’ve never met me. With them, I can share my biggest dreams and my darkest secrets. I will never feel their judging glare or their betrayal. There are some things you can only tell a stranger.
